Duke
University
Boasting superb academics, gorgeous facilities, and a fistful of national
championships, Duke now successfully competes with the nation's oldest
and most prestigious schools for students - and wins. Duke's engineering
programs - particularly electrical and biomedical - are national standouts.
The natural sciences, most notably biology, chemistry, and physics,
are also first-rate. Lately, literary studies at Duke have received
heightened national attention and student interest, particularly literature,
English, and Romance studies. The highly regarded Sandford Institute
of Public Policy offers an interdisciplinary major - unusual at the
undergraduate level - with a strong program of internships and apprenticeships
for students aspiring to be players in the public sphere. All students
must fulfill small Group Learning Experiences, which consist of one
seminar-type course during the freshman year and two more as an upperclassman.
Fraternities and sororities are at the center of campus life. Twenty-nine
percent of the men and 42 percent of the women pledge, and fraternity
parties are open to everyone. "As for extracurricular activities,"
says a student, "there are three: Basketball, basketball, basketball."
Duke University has epitomized the definition of academic upward
mobility in recent years, and is now routinely listed among the
nation's top academic institutions. Duke students have found a way
to pursue a premier education while also making time to enjoy themselves.
University of Miami
At the University of Miami, students can have their fun and get
a great education at the same time. Miami has one of the nation's
top programs in marine biology and was the first university to offer
a degree in music engineering. Miami's main strengths are in the
preprofessional and professional areas. Chemistry majors have access
to the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer while assisting faculty
with research projects. The school's six-year medical program for
outstanding students, and dual degree (grad/undergrad) programs
in law, marine science, business, biomedical engineering, physical
therapy, and medicine receive high marks.
Miami offers a distinctive system of five coed residential colleges,
modeled after those at Yale University. Each college is directed
by a master, a senior faculty member who organizes seminars, concerts,
lectures, social events, and the monthly community dinner. Those
who shun sand between their toes bike down to the boutiques in Coconut
Grove, Bayside, or South Beach or attend on-campus events, such
as International Week, Sportsfest, and the Cardboard Boat Races.
Many of the frats and sororities are small, but they often join
forces in throwing parties. Life really is a beach for students
at the University of Miami. It offers the best of both worlds -
academics and fun!
