Communications/Journalism

Though the pundits constantly tell us that we live in the Information Age, they could just as easily call it the Communications Age. Demand for graduates with media and other communications skills has soared in the past several decades, and so too has the number of programs to train them. For students who want an education in communications, there are two ways to get it: (1) attend an excellent college or university and major in a liberal arts field; (2) enroll in a college of communications for pre-professional training in a particular field.

Among the latter, journalism is usually the most eye-catching for high school students. (Though a few universities offer a full-fledged school of journalism, the subject is usually offered as a department within communications.) Other important communications fields include advertising, public relations, speech, and broadcasting. (Students interested in broadcasting should also read the section on film/television that follows.)
